ILLUMINATION NIGHT, MARTHA’S VINEYARD

 

The artist visited Martha’s Vineyard in 2002 and 2003. During both of his visits, he experienced the “Grand Illumination” also called “Illumination Night”.
On this evening, the whole town is lit up with paper lanterns creating an ethereal and uplifting experience for visitors. Inspired by the light qualities and
colors, Raphael began to photograph the lanterns against the night sky in an un-traditional way. Similar to Jackson Pollock’s method of painting with the
bodily gestures and rhythms
